2007 Benvenuto news <> Japan's "Perception"

I spent some time at
Benvenuto last evening for the first time in several months. This
Italian restaurant, in the Doors-historic building that was once the band's
office and rehearsal workspace, has a new manager, a new menu, and future plans
to incorporate The Doors history even more into their decor. Currently, the
downstairs bathroom that was Jim's vocal booth during the recording of the
'L.A. Woman' album is a gallery of sorts, with photos of the band as well as of
the building and its changes in the years since it was Ground Zero for The
Doors in the 60's. Benvenuto Manager Sergio Cobin told me that Britney
Spears visited the restaurant in June and is pictured in the June 26th issue of
People Magazine. A Google search easily brought up numerous sites with

Benvenuto is open from 5 pm to 11 pm Tuesday through Sunday, and closed

Happy 40th anniversary wishes
to Ray and Dorothy Manzarek, who were married on this date in 1967 with Jim
and Pam as best man and maid of honor. Just Imagine that!
Happy birthday to Riders On The Storm front man Brett Scallions, who turns 36 today. Fans are grateful to Brett for the fresh 'fuel' he has added to the band. Brett recently became a first-time dad, so this has been a great year for him. Congratulations!

2007 Doors related biographies
Remember, there are two
new autobiographies recently published by men who were close to the
band. Paul Ferrara was the staff photographer for The Doors and close
friend of Jim Morrison. It is his photo that graces the cover of the
'Waiting For The Sun' album. Paul's autobiography "Flash Of
Eden" can be ordered in print or electronically from Author House here.
Doug Lubahn played bass on three of The Doors' albums. His
autobiography "My Days With The Doors and Other Stories" can be ordered

Robby Krieger's signing appearance on Sunday afternoon at the Rhino "Pop-Up Store" in Los Angeles is now listed as between 4:30 and 5:30. The original press release stated it would begin at 4:00. An email blast today from The Doors mailing list further explains that Robby will sign a memorabilia item that you bring, but a Rhino store purchase is required to gain access to the signing event. The Doors' first album is the focus of a tribute show of sorts in Lakeland, Florida in February 2008. 2007 Morrison Hotel report <> 'My Dinner With Jimi'
Morrison Hotel is still
standing ... shuttered and boarded up, but it's still there. I did a
drive-by last week when I was in L.A. and found several workers there, taking a
break. One of them spoke English and told me that they were repairing
some of the gates. Despite the rodent and vermin infestations and
abominable conditions inside, there were homeless people still trying to get in
so they were soldering the broken gates to keep them out. The front door
was ajar and I asked if I could go just inside the lobby to take a few photos,
but he said no. I asked if those yellow or mustard colored tiles were
still in place in the entryway, and he said yes.

Riders On The Storm did it again last night, playing to a capacity crowd at San Diego's House of Blues. This was the show re-scheduled from late September; the original show at 4th & B was postponed when the venue had some licensing issues. There was no opening band and the band took to the stage promptly at 9:00 p.m. to 'O Fortuna'. The set list: Love Me Two Times ~ Break On Through ~ When The Music's Over ~ Strange Days (extended intro by Ray) ~ Peace Frog (with Robby doing Chuck Berry's duck walk) ~ Blue Sunday ~ Soft Parade (drum tech Owen joined Ty on the riser for a rocking drum duet!) ~Moonlight Drive ~ Horse Latitudes (Ray did the honors) ~ Wild Child ~ Love Her Madly ~ Alabama Song ~ Back Door Man ~ Spanish Caravan (with Robby's flamenco intro with his custom Rick Turner guitar) ~ "Sex Machine" / Touch Me ~ L.A. Woman ~~~ encore: Ray told a story about his first piano lesson before playing his intro to Light My Fire. The show ended at 11:00. There were several times during the show that Jim and his birthday were honored. What a rocking show it was. Special thanks to Brett for handing me his tambourine at the end of the show!

The Doors of the 21st Century played
their last show using that name in August 2005 in Atlantic City, New
Jersey. The show was filmed for what should have been the debut show of
VH-1 Classic channel's Decades Rock Live series. For legal reasons
related to John Densmore's lawsuit against Ray and Robby, the show was never
allowed to be broadcast. An eBay auction listing by the producer (I
think) of that show, ended last evening with no takers for the "buy it

2007 a year ago tonite ... <> Jim headstone rubbing at Whisky
At this time one year ago, the
Sunset Strip was in a total Doors frenzy. The Doors were kicking off
their 40th anniversary with the mega-celebration which was centered around the
release of the coffee table book, "The Doors By The Doors."
Robby was at the Whisky signing books. Ray was signing them next door at
the Cat Club and hosting a preview of the exhibit honoring The Doors which is
now on display at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Museum in
Cleveland. John was down the street at Book Soup signing and leading a
poetry reading tribute to Jim. The night ended with a thrilling jam
session with Robby and Ray, Slash, Chester Bennington, Perry Farrell, and other
musicians. It sure was a memorable and exciting night.
A rubbing of Jim Morrison's headstone was spotted on the wall of The Whisky last night during a book signing by Slash, who was promoting his new autobiography. It is hung on the wall over the door where the bands load in and out, and has a soft spotlight shining on it. see photo (thanks, Beverly)

the artists featured in a new film called 'Obscene' about a publisher's
fight to print the works of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Malcolm X, Che

2007 ROTS San Diego re-scheduled <> Bruce Botnick interview
Riders On The Storm were
scheduled to play San Diego's 4th & B Theater back on September
29th. That show was suddenly postponed when the venue was temporarily
shut down for licensing issues. Ticketmaster has now advised the show is
re-scheduled for Friday, December 7th at the House of Blues in San Diego. The
email from Ticketmaster says that the original tickets will be honored for the

Ray and Dorothy Manzarek became grandparents again this week! Pablo and his wife Shar and #1 son Noah welcomed Apollo Ray Manzarek into their lives on Sunday, October 14. He weighed in at 8 lbs. 15 oz., and measured 22 inches long. Congratulations to the entire Manzarek family!
Riders On The Storm played Juarez, Mexico on Friday, October 5th. An American fan who lives just over the border in New Mexico managed to film some of it and has uploaded several clips to YouTube. Bad news / good news about
the much anticipated The Doors Vinyl Box Set and its release, which was set
for this month. The following statement was released earlier today by
Jeff Jampol, Manager of The Doors: "The Doors Vinyl Box will not be ready
for October - the test pressings were not up to our standards, and the LA Woman
artwork was also felt to not be 100%. Bruce Botnick, Jac Holzman and
Bernie Grundman went through great time, expense and personal attention to get
the masters PERFECT - and we all feel they succeeded. Then, the first
round of test pressings were found to be faulty. We traced it back to bad
compounds in the virgin vinyl, and it appears that the original supplier of
vinyl will not be able to deliver consistent quality. Bruce then sourced
new virgin vinyl from Europe, we did a second round of test pressings, and they
sounded marvelous! Between waiting for mothers (a component part in the
vinyl pressings) and the re-separated and printed artwork, the final numbered
boxes will be delayed until February 2008. This is a total drag for us,
we wanted them out there by the end of this month, but we're only doing this
one time, and The Doors felt it necessary to have EVERYTHING right, even if it
meant not having them out in time for the 4th Quarter this year. So - our
apologies to all of you - especially those who pre-ordered and are expecting a
delivery this month. It ain't gonna happen, but they will be here in
February, I am told. If anyone DID pre-order, we will gladly offer full
refunds with no charges should you not wish to wait, and again, our sincere
apologies - we want every aspect of the releases to be perfect: Masters,
sound, packaging, art, liner notes, etc."
I started this news story off by saying this was bad news AND good news. Sure, this very collectible release is going to miss the chance to have holiday gift wrap on it, and that is unfortunate ... but I have to interject a personal observation on this. My entire career was spent in the plastics industry. Most people have probably never given a second thought to plastics processing, but it is very complex. Sub-par materials may find suitable outlets in flooring and fence products, but do not belong pressed into vinyl records. This delay will be disappointing to many, but kudos to The Doors for insisting that they get it right and in so doing, missing the 'sweet spot' of the 4th Quarter. Fans should agree this delay is preferable to having to complain about poor quality and hassling with product returns or exchanges!

Juarez, Mexico on Friday night. I found a blog by someone who
attended the show ... and son-of-a-gun, Robby dusted off 'The Mosquito' for the
crowd! As a matter of fact, it appears that part of the audience 'broke

Monday, October 15. This event is re-scheduled from a July appearance,

band.
The Doors' legendary guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Robby Krieger will give an exclusive interview and performance. The event is free and open to the public. Krieger will be interviewed by five student DJs from the BIRN (Berklee Internet Radio Network) for 90 minutes, taking questions from the audience, then he will perform a 30-minute set with Morrison Crossing, an all-Berklee-student band. Seating is first come, first served. The interview/performance will be put in heavy rotation on the BIRN following the event.
“This Doors newest release establishes a deep connection to the Boston music scene. We are honored that they’ve decided to fly Robby here just to do this exclusive interview with Berklee’s internet radio station. The Doors were always about innovation and experimentation, and that defines so much of what Berklee and the BIRN are about,” says Stephen Croes, BIRN founder and dean of Berklee’s Music Technology Division.
Robby Krieger wrote some of the Doors' best-known songs, including "Light

Bad news: Riders On The Storm were
scheduled to play 4th & B club in San Diego tonight. A few hours
before last night's (Friday) show at Anaheim's House of Blues, I was advised by
Riders On The Storm manager Tom Vitorino that the San Diego show is postponed
because the club was just shut down for license issues within the last few
days. Tom said his intention was to re-schedule the show sometime in
December. There is no obvious indication of this situation on the club's
website at http://www.4thandb.com/index.html but
once you click on the "buy tickets" link, the info is there that the
show is postponed. When you click on the "calendar" link, most
of the near-term shows either indicate postponed or cancelled. Stay tuned
for more information when the show is re-scheduled.
Good news: Riders On The Storm played another killer show last night at Anaheim's House of Blues. The band took to the stage at 9:45 as 'O Fortuna' peaked and proceeded to delight the very full house with this set list: Love Me Two Times ~ Break On Through ~ Strange Days ~ Waiting For The Sun ~ When The Music's Over ~ Peace Frog ~ Blue Sunday ~ The Soft Parade ~ Alabama Song ~ Back Door Man ~ Five To One ~ Touch Me ~ L.A. Woman ~~~ encore: Riders On The Storm ~ Roadhouse Blues ~ Light My Fire. The show ended at 11:50 ... so we got 2 hours & 5 minutes! Before the band played Waiting For The Sun, Brett took the opportunity to mention that 3 weeks ago he and his wife became the proud parents of a baby boy, and that for nine months they had been 'waiting for the son' ... a clever lead-in, and excellent rendition of the song. Honorable mention goes out to drum tech Owen Goldman, who joined Ty Dennis on drums during The Soft Parade which gave us a serious rhythm section on that song and really enhanced its vibe! It was great. There were Riders On The Storm posters provided for the 'meet & greet' which were signed by Brett, Ray and Robby on the upstairs level after the show.
Paul Ferrara's autobiography "Flash Of Eden" is finished and going through the final steps of self-publishing. 'Making HWY', a bonus DVD with behind-the-scenes footage of HWY, will be included with the first 50 copies reserved through his website at www.paulferrara.net. If you miss out on being in that first 50, the footage will eventually be on his website for viewing. Paul's goal is to have "Flash Of Eden" published by Christmas of this year. 'Riders On The Storm' was used on "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" in the season premiere last Thursday night. The scene involved an environmental activist who was tied to a tree that he was trying to prevent from being cut down, and a thunderstorm came up.
Riders On The Storm frontman Brett Scallions and his wife Abby Gennett (former MTV VJ and singer/guitarist for the band Slunt), gave birth to their first child a few weeks ago. They named their son Jagger Song Scallions. Congratulations to Brett and Abby!
Four of the six Doors albums released in miniature LP sleeves in Japan on August 28th, ranked in the top 100 on the weekly album chart for period August 27 to September 2, and includes domestic and foreign artists. The ranking order was The Doors at #62, Strange Days at #81, L.A. Woman at #98, and Waiting For The Sun at #99. This is according to Japan's Oricon Music Charts, similar to Billboard in the USA. 'Experience Hendrix' news
Robby Krieger was one of
the guest performers last
night at the Lucinda Williams show at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles.
This was the fourth of five consecutive nights that Lucinda performed
there. The format was to do the songs from one of her albums in its
entirety, take a break, and then return for more music and guests. There
were several other guests who joined her for one or two numbers during the
second half, but she saved the best for last! During the last number
before the encore, Lucinda tossed a little bit of "ride the snake"
and "riders on the storm" into the lyrics of a song she was
doing. In the encore, Lucinda said what an honor it was to play with her
heroes, that this was a "pivotal moment" in her life, and that she
was inspired by Robby and The Doors ... and then introduced Robby to resounding
affirmation from the audience. They performed "Riders On The
Storm" and then a Lucinda song called "Unsuffer Me." They
had also rehearsed at least one more song, but the lengthy show ran out of time
due to the 12:30 a.m. curfew on Sunday nights.
Robby was scheduled to spend several hours being interviewed, answering questions and playing songs from the Live In Boston '70 CD set back in July at Boston's Berklee College of Music, courtesy of Berklee Internet Radio Network (BIRN). It was to be a free event and open to the public, to coincide with the release of that new music from Bright Midnight Archives. Robby had to postpone the appearance when he was sidelined by a root canal. That appearance has now been re-scheduled for Monday, October 15th. I do not see it on the Berklee website yet, but it's going to happen.
More Robby news: the "Experience Hendrix" tribute concerts which Robby will participate in, have added a second night at NYC's Beacon Theater on Sunday, October 21. The first night at the Beacon Theater is already sold out. That's the good news. The bad news is that Robby will not be participating in the show at Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire on October 17th.

He reports that the quality, including the details and color, are almost perfect: no comparison to the German made sleeves released in 2000. the sleeves, the inner sleeves, and the labels are based on the U.S. original LP issues. The OBI's are based on the 1973 issues (for The Doors and Strange Days), and the 1978 issues of the other four albums from Warner Pioneer Japan. (These OBI's are the oldest ones except for the original 1967-1971 issues from Victor World Group, a record label with no capital relationship to Warner Music Japan.) Additional information: if you send the 'tickets' stuck on all 6 CDs to Warner Music Japan, you will get a box especially made to contain the six miniature sleeves. see photo. The exhibit honoring The Doors at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland was scheduled to end on October 7th. The latest Rock Hall newsletter sent to museum members says that the Doors exhibit is drawing large crowds on a daily basis and has been extended to run through March of 2008. be "guest of honour" on Saturday at the second of two nights of Uli Jon Roth & Friends Sky
Academy Concerts at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood.

not gotten any reports on the show nor any photos to share yet, but I'm hopeful
someone will come to the rescue on that! I would have been there myself
if I did not already have a rock & roll weekend scheduled elsewhere.
A few days ago I reported about Robby's involvement in the "Experience Hendrix" tribute to Jimi at NYC's Beacon Theater in October. According to a press release on emedia.com, this is actually a 5-city tour. So far, the east coast is getting all this tour action, so I hope it heads west. As far as I know, Robby will be performing at all of the announced dates. Riders On The Storm played
a rocking, but altogether too-brief, set last night at the Pacific
Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, CA. The late addition of Pat Travers to the
double-bill with Paul Rodgers seriously cut into the available stage time at
this venue with its 10pm curfew. Travers started at 6:05 and played until
7:00. Jim Ladd of KLOS did introductions etc. at 7:25, so it was 7:30 by
the time "O Fortuna" peaked and the band took to the stage. The
set list was: Love Me Two Times; Break On Through; When The Music's
Over; addition of Leon on bongos; Peace Frog / Blue Sunday; Strange Days
with keyboard intro by Ray; Soft Parade (first time ever ... outstanding,
with kudos to the band for dusting this gem off, and to Brett for a fantastic
job on those vocals!); James Brown 'Sex Machine' dedication; Touch Me;
L.A. Woman. 8:35, end of set ... encore of Light My Fire,
with their set finally ending at 8:45. One hour & 15 minutes was just
NOT enough time for the Riders / Doors fans, but it was a great show and the
first time southern California fans got to see Brett Scallions as
frontman. I'll download my photos and share a few (if they are
worthy) either later today or tomorrow.

Brett Scallions and his wife are very close to becoming first-time
parents. A fellow band member in Circus Diablo is also an expectant
father, so the band has pulled itself off the remainder of the OzzFest tour,

room to be with his wife and baby before Riders On The Storm hit the road
again. The tour dates announced so far are September in Atlanta, and then
on to Mexico in early October for three shows.

Recently I scanned my ticket
stubs from the five Doors concerts I saw between 1968 and 1970. I am
afraid I still do not remember any more than what I wrote some years ago, but
at least now the ticket stubs can be seen, along with their $5.50 to $6.50
prices. All five of my stubs are featured in Greg Shaw's book 'The
Doors On The Road', pictured in the margin by each concert it belonged
to. The Felt Forum ticket stub is part of the cover artwork of that
book. Years later I was surprised to discover that my Felt Forum
ticket stub also was incorporated in the CD artwork on the first Bright
Midnight Records release, the 'Sampler'. I have added them
to the Vague Memories page, as well
as the individual pages for each concert.
Riders On The Storm will play at the Monterey County Fair's Patee Stage as part of the Summer of Love Festival on Sunday, July 29 as previously reported on www.raymanzarek.us and www.robbykrieger.com. Pollstar.com now reports that the band will also be part of the festival line-up on Saturday, July 28 as well, but this has not been confirmed yet through those websites.
John Densmore is one of the special guest performers at a musical performance celebrating Donald Rubinstein. The event will be on July 21 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. read full story

Well, this is disturbing. I would like to ignore it except for the fact that this story was reported in the U.K.'s Daily Mail and undoubtedly there will be no avoiding this story. A French-born former New York Times journalist named Sam Bernett who was managing the Rock 'n' Roll Circus in Paris at the time of Jim Morrison's death, has a forthcoming book to be published in France called "The End - Jim Morrison". The book alleges that the rumors about Jim's death being from a heroin overdose at the club are true, and goes on to reveal how Jim was moved from the club to the apartment on Rue Beautreillis. According to the story, these allegations are being taken seriously by the French authorities, and it may lead to the investigation into Jim's death being reopened. read full story

Pier Records is an independent
record store here in southern California, on Balboa Peninsula in Newport
Beach. According to a story yesterday, the store has a replica of Jim
Morrison's tombstone and invites customers to sign it! The store also
features and sells artwork of celebrities done by a local artist. I
haven't been to that store in many years but will be not far from it in a few
weeks, so I'll make a point of checking it out and hopefully getting a picture

2007 webmistress interview!
Soon after I returned from the
Rock Hall's opening of the exhibit honoring The Doors, I
was contacted by a writer named Helen. She is a museum member and
volunteer archivist, and she also writes a rock & roll column for an Ohio
monthly magazine called LifeStyles. Helen was going to do an article on
The Doors exhibit at the Rock Hall. Because so many items from my own
collection are on loan there, she asked if she could interview me about my fan
interest, etc. I have never before agreed to be interviewed, but since
this was tied in with the Rock Hall exhibit on The Doors, I said okay. We
had a delightful phone interview and I also supplied her with some
photos. LifeStyles Magazine will be out in print next week, but the story

August 11th; Chastain Park in Atlanta on September 22nd; and 3
dates in Mexico: Mexico City on October 2; Monterrey on October
3; and Guadalajara on October 5th.
The new July 12-26 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine (cover: 40th Anniversary) has several Doors / Morrison references within its summary of recollections of 1967. Included are a paragraph about Jim's arrest in New Haven; remembrances of the Sunset Strip and the Doors billboard with quotes from John Densmore; and a look at some of the psychedelic Fillmore and Family Dog poster artwork. Both 'The Doors' and 'Strange Days' made the RS list of 40 Essential Albums of 1967. The entire issue looks like a great read!

Robby Krieger had a guest acting role on 'Married With Children' back in
1992. Whenever that particular episode is rerun on television (along with
John's two sitcom appearances and Ray's appearances), I list it in the calendar
below. The 7th season which includes that episode is going to be released

Jim Morrison is remembered by famed groupie Pamela Des Barres in the June issue of Classic Rock Magazine (cover: Black Sabbath): I knew Jim when he considered himself a poet above all other things. He thought the pop star stuff was a lark really, and he knew one day he'd make his mark as a poet. Whenever I'd spend time with him -- which wasn't that often because he was really a one-woman kind of guy -- but whenever they fought, I'd see him and we would hang out a little bit. A sweet soul, but tortured. Two definite sides to him: the sweet gentle poet side and the freaky dangerous mother-fucker side. And I saw both sides. He was a bad drunk. Some people can drink and be happy. He was a mean, bad drunk and it made him think too hard and worry and concern himself with stuff. He'd be in front of the Whisky curled up in the gutter and people would just walk by him. People like to memorialise him now as some incredible elegant creature. He was that and many other things. He just hauled off and slapped me across the face at the Whisky for no reason, sitting in our booth -- whammo! Then he took a beer and just threw it all over Miss Lucy (GTO). There was no reason for it. We didn't provoke it or anything. Pamela has a new book coming out on July 1st with more groupie stories, and has some book signing appearances scheduled. The Doors were honored tonight in London at the annual MOJO Awards. According to the on-line story I just found about the event, The Doors received the MOJO Hall of Fame Award, which is presented to an act who is best described as an 'artist's artist'. Jac Holzman was also honored with the MOJO Medal, presented 'to an industry figure whose vision and integrity have proven that the words "music" and "business" needn't always be mutually exclusive. for $140,000. in a live eBay on-line auction today. The item was
