March 30, 2003 miscellaneous news from Houston and Dallas <> Ray Manzarek on Rockline
Ray Manzarek will be on Rockline on Wednesday, April 2 according to the upcoming schedule posted on Rockline's website at http://www.rocklineradio.com/index.html This is a syndicated program; this website has affiliate station listings.
Tour merchandise: Along with the baseball cap, poster, and numerous styles of tee-shirts and baseball jersey shirts, there are new items that have been added to the tour merchandise tables. There are bandanas ($12), key chains ($5), and stickers ($3).
I inquired about the European dates for the summer tour during this wartime. Ray shook his head and said it's not going to happen, although they might do something in Europe later in the year. Robby also told me that they will not be touring Europe this summer. However, the dates in Japan are still a "go" at this time.
I asked Ray about the status of the RayBal project. He said it is completed, and now they have to figure out how to market it, perhaps through the internet. The cancelled RayBal appearance will not be re-scheduled.
I asked Ray about the status of the U.S. DVD release of 'Love Her Madly' ... he replied that it is still available in Europe only in PAL format, which is not compatible with U.S. DVD format, and he does not know a U.S. release date.

March 25, 2003 Boston Orpheum show on-sale this week <> all-female Doors tribute CD

March 25, 2003 Robby's golf tourney results
Robby Krieger was a celebrity golfer on Sunday in a charity golf tournament hosted by KLOS morning radio team, Mark & Brian. When the results are uploaded to their website, I'll post the link here. In the meantime: Mark & Brian reported on the results this morning. Robby & his foursome finished in 2nd place in 'A' flight. The foursome with Fee Waybill of The Tubes finished 1st place in 'A' flight. Martin Sheen's group finished in 2nd place in 'B' flight.

March 24, 2003 John in 'Square Pegs' TV re-run
John Densmore appeared as himself in a 1982 episode of "Square Pegs" entitled 'Muffy's Bas Mitzvah' episode #1.9, first broadcast November 29, 1982. Devo performs in this episode, and John appeared at the very end drumming behind 'Johnny Flash' singing onstage at the end of the show. John was mentioned by name early in the episode, and in the credits he is listed as appearing as himself. The episode will be re-run again on Saturday night, April 5, on TV Land channel according to TiVo. Check local TV listings for time.

March 23, 2003 Robby played in celebrity golf tourney today
Robby Krieger was a celebrity golfer today in the KLOS Mark & Brian 3rd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament at Coyote Hills Golf Course, Fullerton, CA ... a mere two miles from my home! I caught up with Robby several times at the holes where spectator access was allowed, and got to chat a little. He was wearing a white golf shirt, tan pants, and a US Open baseball cap. Robby was paired with the 4 golfers who won the last M & B tournament. He said they had birdied at each hole so far, so he was feeling pretty good about their score and thought they just might win today! Robby was not at the "pairing party" the night before; the band was rehearsing. They leave Wednesday for their Phoenix show that night. I asked Robby how Waylon is doing. He said Waylon does not have a band right now, but that he is keeping himself busy writing new songs. When KLOS posts the final scores and rankings of today's tournament, I'll include the link here so we can see if Robby's team won!
I'll be at the Houston and Dallas shows this weekend, so watch for reviews on this site next Sunday or Monday.

John Densmore appeared in several episodes of "Square Pegs" in 1982, which get re-run periodically on TV Land channel. Yesterday was another broadcast of the "Open 24 Hours" episode #1.8, first broadcast November 22, 1982. Storyline: Marshall appoints himself as Johnny Slash's manager. Johnny's band 'Open 24 Hours' plays a gig in a grocery store, and John is introduced as "John Densmore of the original Doors."

March 21, 2003 Carson Daly re-run pre-empted <> Robby Krieger in celebrity golf tourney
The Doors 21st Century appearance on Last Call With Carson Daly scheduled for overnight last night, was pre-empted due to extended war and casualties coverage. It was not broadcast earlier this week as scheduled variously by conflicting website and t.v. guide listings.
Robby Krieger is one of the celebrity golfers who will be playing in the KLOS 3rd Annual Mark & Brian Golf Tournament on Sunday, March 23 at Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton, California. This golf tournament is a benefit for Susan B. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation & the C.S.R.C./KLOS Food Bank. This is Robby's third year being a celebrity participant in this very fun event. The Doors 21st Century appearance on Last Call With Carson Daly re-run schedule is confusing, based on the NBC website. Yesterday it looked like the re-run was last night. It may actually be Wednesday night overnight, instead of Thursday night overnight. I suggest recording BOTH nights!

Phoenix New Times dated March 20th has a brief article about the upcoming show at the Dodge Theater on March 26 entitled: 'Reunion tour hits potholes aplenty': http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/issues/2003-03-20/intown.html/1/index.html?src=newsletter If the link doesn't work, the story read: "Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger have chosen to relight the Doors' fire with a "reunion" tour, with the Cult's Ian Astbury stepping forward in Jim Morrison's spot. But the two might have known problems would crop up, since, well, people are strange. Already, drummer John Densmore, who declined the tour, has sued his bandmates, forcing a name change to Doors 21st Century. And just last week, news broke that Police drummer Stewart Copeland, scheduled to replace Densmore before an injury forced him out, is suing Manzarek and Krieger for $1 million. VH-1 is showing an American Bandstand 50-year special this afternoon. There was a brief clip of The Doors in 1967 performing Light My Fire on the show, followed by Dick Clark talking to Jim about people's perception that they are from San Francisco. The whole clip was probably 30 seconds in length.

Stewart Copeland commented on The Doors to a reporter at an after-party on Monday night, following the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. According to the story in today's New York Times: "Mr. Copeland had appeared recently on "The Tonight Show" as the drummer for the regrouped super group the Doors, playing with two original members and the former Cult vocalist IAN ASTBURY. How did it feel to be part of a new band? "That's over, man," Mr. Copeland said. "That's done. Ian is great and he can do it, but I'm not going to be with them." L.A. radio station Arrow 93.1 FM had another Music News item on their site today about the drummer lawsuits: Sue Me, Sue You: Is it that drummers don't like The Doors, or that lawyers love drummers? First, original drummer John Densmore sued his old band for being his old band. Now, The Doors 21st Century drummer Stewart Copeland (better known for his band The Police) has filed a $1 million lawsuit. The target of both suits are original Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger, who are no doubt saying "Jeez! Give us a break!" Copeland alleges that he was promised his services would be used on an upcoming tour and album by the reunited Doors, and then Manzarek and Krieger hired a replacement drummer (Ty Dennis). Wonder if Ty's got a lawyer too?

March 10, 2003 STRANGE BUT APPARENTLY TRUE: Stewart Copeland reportedly filed lawsuit <> radio station reports on Stewart's departure
Stewart Copeland has reportedly filed his own lawsuit. A friend heard on the radio the other day about Stewart having left the band. He did some legal research and found that Kinetic Kollections Overseas, Inc. and Stewart Copeland has brought suit in L.A. Superior Court against Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and Doors Touring, Inc. for reneging on promise to pay Copeland 20% of net profits from the album and tour and hiring a replacement drummer. It was filed on March 7, 2003 and is Case No. BC 291738. (thanks, Howard)

Los Angeles Magazine, March 2003 issue (cover: Nicholas Cage & Meryl Streep) is called The Movie Issue and features an article on 'The 25 Greatest Movies About Los Angeles'. Oliver Stone's 'The Doors' made the list at #19: The Doors (Oliver Stone, 1991). Maybe if this film had bought into the myth a little less, it wouldn't have glossed over the Doors' uneasy ascent in the '60s, when they were pointedly uninvited to the Monterey Pop Festival and dismissed by L.A.'s utopian music scene—all of which made their ultimate triumph that much more thrilling. But like his subject, one of rock's great bands in spite of itself, Stone has the courage of his pretensions, and somehow a more searching, incisive, and dispassionate portrait wouldn't have caught as well the impact of Val Kilmer's Jim Morrison, whose lyrics mapped a city on the dark side of the sun. March 3, 2003 San Antonio show went on sale this morning
The Doors 21st Century at Freeman Coliseum, San Antonio, TX on Sunday, March 30th went on sale at 10:00 this morning. Ticketmaster has been indicating a March 10th on-sale date, but local San Antonio ads said they would go on sale this morning, and they did! According to Freeman Coliseum, seating chart to use is Endstage Setup. However, Freeman box office also said it is general admission except for balcony and box seats, which conflicts with the seating chart. (Who knows!)
