January 26, 2003      Rolling Stone Magazine re-visits the 'Miami incident'

Rolling Stone Magazine, January 23, 2003 issue  (cover:  Justin Timberlake) has a 1/4 page feature on page 22 called 'Rolling Stone Knows':  "The Biggest Brains In Rock Answer Your Hardest Questions."   In response to the question submitted by Christian Ruzich of Julian, CA,  "Did Jim Morrison really whip it out in Florida?"  RS Magazine replied:

On March 1st, 1969, when The Doors played the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, Morrison showed up late, drunk and in the mood to experiment with confrontational theater.  In an antagonistic monologue, he told the crowd, "Maybe you love getting your face stuck in shit," and later doffed his shirt and asked, "You want to see my cock, don't you?"   Some eyewitnesses swore that he then flashed the audience;  others insist that he tugged at his pants but never actually revealed his lizard.  Organist Ray Manzarek says Morrison was using the shirt as a matador's cape in front of his crotch, and it was impossible to tell:  "I don't know if he pulled it out ... I think he hypnotized everybody."  In a trial the next year, Morrison testified that he kept it in his pants and had even been wearing boxer shorts that night:  "It was kind of unusual, really, because I don't usually wear undergarments.  I got out of the habit four or five years ago."   Morrison was found guilty of indecent exposure and open profanity, both misdemeanors.  His sentence (six months of hard labor plus a $500 fine) was on appeal when he died in 1971.   (thanks, Mark F.)

January 17, 2003      The Doors 21st Century on Jay Leno's "Tonight Show"

The Doors 21st Century performed a rousing 'Light My Fire' on the Thursday night "Tonight Show" hosted by Jay Leno.  It was not the full length version, but it seemed longer than the a.m. radio version.   Ian and Ray got most of the camera action, but there was a nice close-up of Robby's hands doing his guitar magic!   Robby was dressed in his camouflage pants and his green Lizard Kings hockey jersey ... what a crack-up!     Ray sang back-up vocals.   Ian is looking mighty fine, but it's kind of eerie how much he is looking like Jim currently.  Let's hope that does NOT back-fire on the band's efforts.  There were a few quick close-ups of Stewart, but Angelo got none - darn it.     The performance was so very late in the show that there was no chit-chat time, and the show ended immediately following the performance and handshakes from Jay.   The words "21st Century" were printed in smaller lettering below The Doors logo on Stewart's drums.   Next up:   VIVA LAS VEGAS ... WOO HOOO
