November 28, 2006     John onstage with Oliver & Val <> Tribaljazz on Thursday is postponed <> Frank Lisciandro interview  <>  Q&A will be filmed <> poetry reading in Paris
John Densmore will join Oliver Stone, Val Kilmer, Kyle MacLachlan and Kathleen Quinlan on stage for a lively Q&A following the screening of "The Doors" movie at Mann's Chinese 6 Theaters on Hollywood Boulevard on Wednesday, December 6th to celebrate the 15-year release of the DVD.   The screening begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Q&A.  Fans will have the opportunity to ask any of the guests questions about the movie or their careers.  The questions can be submitted at the time the tickets are reserved.  To get all the details and the link to reserve tickets (and ask questions), follow this link.   Please note:  if you plan to attend, there is a movie premiere the same night next door at the Chinese Theater, so allow time for plenty of extra hoopla and crowds to navigate in order to arrive on time.   And no, I do NOT know if John or Val or anyone will make themselves available for autograph signing afterwards, so please do not write me to ask that question.

John Densmore's Tribaljazz performance scheduled for this Thursday evening has been postponed and will be re-scheduled.   Tribaljazz were to perform at Hear Music at Starbucks at 1429 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica on Thursday, November 30th at 7:00 p.m.  (thanks, David my son)

November 27, 2006     Jim referenced in off-Broadway play <> November 8th in Rolling Stone
Jim Morrison gets referenced, along with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, in the rock musical "27 Heaven" which is going on the road for a few months before opening off-Broadway in the spring.   "27 Heaven" was created by Ian Halperin, who co-wrote "Love & Death:  The Murder of Kurt Cobain."   To read about this play and how Jim is included in the story, go here

A new French documentary about Jim's last days in Paris will be aired on French TV (France 2) on November 30th around 10:55 p.m.   This film will include interviews with John Densmore, Frank Lisciandro, Bill Siddons, Gilles Yepremian, Phil Trainer, an old interview with Agnes Varda, the current owner of the apartment where Jim died, an ex-junkie who claims she sold Jim some heroine, and the fireman who found Jim's body.  (thanks, Gilles)

Everyone knows the story about how Jim Morrison vetoed the use of "Light My Fire" for Buick's new Opal advertising campaign.  I have been sent a bunch of links to the advertisements that were presumably created for that ad campaign, until Jim put the kibosh on it.   I do not know how these ads were obtained or where they have been all these years ... but it is interesting to look at them and see how Buick hoped to incorporate the "Light My Fire" theme into their ads.    (thanks, Gilles)

Elektra Records gets a nice feature story in the December 2006 issue of Record Collector magazine (cover:  The 250 Most Valuable Records of our Time).  A portion of the article is about "Elektra Vision!  The artwork of a label that was proud to look as good as it sounded."  On the subject of The Doors:   THE DOORS Strange Days (EKL 4014/EKS 74014   1967    After the no-holds barred, close up photography of the first Doors album, William S. Harvey was faced with a problem when the group wasn't available to do a shoot for Strange Days.  He chose instead to create a surreal tableau of circus midgets and strange characters, framed in a New York alley.  It's a measure of a great sleeve for a classic album that it's hard to imagine any other image being used, and Bill Harvey says it was one of his father's favourite designs."

Ray Manzarek did a phone-in interview this morning with Philadelphia classic rock station WMGK 102.9 FM with DJ John DeBella.   Ray talked about the new book, "The Doors By The Doors" and told the story of the performance at the Whisky when Jim did "The End" in its entirety the first time.  Ray said that the music held up through time because it was complex, not just simple 'head-banger' music.  When asked what his favorite rumor about the band was, Ray replied the rumor that Jim is alive, of course.  (thanks, Jes)

John Densmore will be on L.A. radio KPFK 90.7 FM at 11:00 this morning ... short notice, I know.   You may be able to listen to it live at:  http://www.kpfk.org/

John's appearance this morning as noted above was promotion for the Tribaljazz CD.  The deejay played several cuts and interviewed John throughout the one hour show, during which he spoke about the Tribaljazz band members and the origins of several of the tracks.  Near the end of the show The Doors "Perception" box set was discussed, its unique packaging, and a partial play of 'The Spy' followed by 'Queen of the Highway.'  There was no mention of the huge celebration last Wednesday night on the Sunset Strip.  The broadcast was streamed live and I think that sometimes those public radio programs are archived, so if interested, check out http://www.kpfk.org/  for possible availability.

The Doors on the Sunset Strip ... WOW, MAN!!!   There are so many news stories and photo links to share ... John Densmore and Val Kilmer were reportedly both onstage at the Whisky on Wednesday, along with Robby and Ray.  Trust me when I tell you that neither of those people were onstage.  Incredibly, that is how the performance was grossly mis-reported by ContactMusic.com news.   They later released an amended story without even mentioning their original gaffe.  Read that fantasy story & then the reality here.

November 9, 2006     The Doors legacy is alive and well
The Doors legacy is alive and well, judging from the thousands of fans who swarmed the Sunset Strip last night.   Fans were already reportedly lined up mid afternoon in front of the Whisky for the event which officially began at 6:00.  The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame mini-exhibit preview featured Jim's 'Pony Express' poem, many other family and personal documents, Ray's keyboards, and wonderful photos.  At 8:00 or so inside the Whisky was the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's unveiling of the large plaque that will be mounted outside opposite the box office window.  Robby and Ray were onstage, along with author Ben Fong-Torres, L.A. deejay Jim Ladd, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curator Howard Kramer, Whisky owner Mario Maglieri, and Doors manager Jeff Jampol.   John's event down the block at Book Soup was the next big event at 9:00 and featured poet Michael C. Ford, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park and Perry Farrell reading more of Jim's poetry, and a little acoustic performance with Perry's current band Satellite Party and John on hand drum and shells.  John was dressed all in white.  He finished the performance with an excerpt from his solo show from the 90's, which humorously related how he introduced The Doors' brand new album to his parents, song by song.  The performance area was decorated with a large black & white Brodsky photo as a backdrop, a large paisley area rug, and original copies of Jim's privately published The Lords (Notes On Vision) and The New Creatures on the shelf behind the performers.   Back at the Whisky after the signings ended there was a big buzz about what the big surprise at 11pm was going to be.  The stage had been set up all evening with band equipment, so we knew something was afoot.  There was speculation that it might be Val Kilmer, as he was spotted earlier in the day in the Tower Records parking lot and mentioned on the Mark & Brian show a day or two earlier, that he was putting together a band and he would be singing Doors songs.  As it turned out, the performers were Ray and Robby (of course!), joined by Chester Bennington, Slash, and Perry Farrell & Satellite Party.  They performed 6 songs:  Roadhouse Blues, Break On Through, Touch Me, People Are Strange, L. A. Woman, and Light My Fire.   Chester and Perry shared and switched off on vocals, especially on the last two songs.  I will share some photos in a few days.  There will be footage and news stories running on both MTV and VH1 today, but I don't know what times those run.   It was a wonderful and thrilling night, but unfortunately it looked like there were many hundreds (possibly thousands) of fans lined up outside the Whisky who were never able to get inside.  There was a lot of security as well as fire marshals concerned about the club capacity.  Thank you to The Doors and The Doors management for giving the fans such a great party.

November 6, 2006     Doors celebration final details <> 'Perception' box set mechanics <> Morrison Hotel Gallery in Tokyo <> Doors movie screening at Mann's Chinese
The Doors celebration on the fabulous Sunset Strip on Wednesday night is shaping up this way:  All venues will be open at 6pm.  (Remember, books can be purchased at any of them, but pre-orders through Book Soup MUST be picked up at their main store at 8818 Sunset.)   The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony bestowing the Landmark plaque on the Whisky, occurs at the Whisky at 8pm.   This is apparently going to be inside the Whisky.  (I could be wrong, but don't expect this to be open to the public.)  Immediately following that, all Doors will be at their respective venues from then (shortly after 8pm) until 11:00.  They will be pretty much signing books the whole time except for an occasional absence for interviews (or nature calls, I'd guess).  The Densmore poetry reading at Book Soup (I believe the Annex, next door) is at 9pm with Perry Farrell and whoever else.   He will be doing book signings before and after that performance.  A very informed source who requests anonymity, tells me that there MAY be a BIG surprise at the end of the evening at 11pm onstage at the Whisky.   But before you get your hopes up, that source also assures me that NO, it will NOT be all three Doors together. :=(    I do not know myself WHAT that big surprise is, but I'll certainly be there to find out.  I hope to see lots of you at Benvenuto in the afternoon.

Val Kilmer was an in-studio guest this morning on KLOS's Mark & Brian radio show.  As reported a few days ago, The Doors movie by Oliver Stone is being re-released in December as the "Anniversary Edition."  In the course of this morning's radio interview, Val indicated that there will be a screening of the movie on Wednesday, December 6th at Mann's Chinese Theater (formerly, Grauman's) on Hollywood Boulevard.  He did not necessarily indicate that he would be there, or Oliver Stone ... just that there is a screening scheduled.  (thanks, Tim)

Ray Manzarek extends an open invitation to Barbra Streisand to do a Doors song, according to a blurb in today's New York Post:  "Barbra Streisand is no Jim Morrison, but she has an open invitation to do a Doors song. Some more details are emerging about Wednesday's events on the Sunset Strip.  All pre-orders must be picked up at Book Soup's main store at 8818 Sunset (not Cat Club or Whisky).  John's performance along with Perry Farrell may also include John Doe, and will occur around 9 to 10pm at the Book Soup Annex. He will be signing before and after.  There will be a limit to how much a fan can get signed, but I don't know exactly what that is.  Common sense dictates that anything in excess of 2 or 3 items will be refused;  that is not official, just an educated guess.  Bottom line:  don't abuse the privilege.  Pick one or two primo pieces from your collection, and hope that those will be signed.  That may vary by band member and will probably depend on the flow of the evening and the crowds.  This is all I know at this time.  If I get more info, I will share it.

"The Doors" movie by Oliver Stone is being re-released in December.  It's now being called the Anniversary Special DVD.  According to BestBuy.com, the release date is December 12th.  I have no idea if there are any extras that were not included with the earlier DVD.   (thanks, Dan)

The DVD rental of the movie "Family Guy" contains clips of Jim's grave at Pere LaChaise.  There are some guys drinking and spilling beer over the grave.  One of the characters says:  'He sailed the Crystal Ship to the other side.'   This is in the deleted scenes, Family Guy Vol. 2, Disc 3, especially The European Road Show clip.  (thanks, Patti)

Perry Farrell's March CD with The Satellite Party will use portions of two of Jim Morrison's poems in his "Woman In The Window" song.  This was reported a while back, but this is an updated story.  Perry will be appearing next Wednesday, November 8th as part of the Sunset Strip celebration, where he'll be with John Densmore at Book Soup.

ONE WEEK TO GO!!!  By this time next week, The Doors 40th anniversary kickoff celebration will be all over except for the stories and memories and the happy fans with signed books!  Today I re-confirmed that Benvenuto will be open mid-day on November 8th for fans who want to visit.  I'll be meeting up with friends there that afternoon and probably having an early dinner before we head up to the Sunset Strip.  Please stop there and join us ... the more the merrier!  Two plaques have been added to the building to explain its important Doors history.  see outside plaque
