October 29, 2005 John's POV discussed on Tom Leykis show <> Val Kilmer on L.A. radio

John Densmore's point of view regarding his refusal to allow Doors music to be used for commercials was the subject of a discussion on the syndicated Tom Leykis radio talk show earlier this week. Tom Leykis quoted from John's recent letter to the L.A. Times. Tom's point of view is that the music business itself is inherently commercial, bands are commercial entities, it is therefore hypocritical to sign a contract to sell music, the band's music has already been exploited, and it's ridiculous to consider 'Break On Through' sacrosanct. There were both pro & con callers to debate the issue. One of the callers made the point about the multiple box sets that have been issued as an example of their commercialism! Val Kilmer was an in-studio guest with Steve Jones (former Sex Pistols) on Steve's daily radio show on L.A. 103.1 Indie station yesterday. At the end of the interview, Steve was asking Val about his role in The Doors movie. In the last few minutes of the show, they decided to sing and play Love Me Two Times. Their impromptu performance was ... let's say, 'rough.' They were having a lot of fun. Val explained that song was not done in the movie, so they decided to put the actual record on. Val and Steve sang and played along with the 'real thing' ... it was very fun to listen to.

October 25, 2005 Isle of Wight DVD release

Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Festival is a new DVD release from Sony Music which will be profiled in Friday's USA Today DVD column. Today's USA Today paragraph said: "Filmed in 1970 and released 27 years later, this filmed record of "Britain's Woodstock" with a crowd of 600,000 contains the final stage performances of Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, who died 12 days later. There's also The Who, Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell, who chides the crowd for acting like "tourists" when a fan interrupts her performance. It's less a pure musical experience than a memorable portrayal of acrimony between promoters and patrons."

October 22, 2005 ICE story about new releases <> Lizard Lounge post deleted

The forthcoming releases from The Doors have been announced in the November issue of ICE Magazine (cover: Springsteen). The limited edition box set titled 'Love / Death / Travel' is indicated for late November release. Of course, The Doors management has already advised that this is now postponed until January, ostensibly because of their plan to distribute one-half of them as promo copies. Over-distribution of promo copies to many recipients who apparently won't even appreciate them and would instead use them as Xmas gifts to others, is the ridiculous excuse given for delaying the release. As I remarked on October 6th, maybe they should simply be more discriminating about who gets the promo copies, so that the fans could have the benefit of getting this product in their own Xmas stockings this year. I suspect it's likely the product is missing its targeted release date (yet again), as earlier statements first promised it for summer 2005, then October 2005. The same ICE story indicates that The Doors Live In Philadelphia '70 would be released on November 22 ... another date that has already slipped to November 29th. read ICE story

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT is not just the name of a Kinks album and song. Fans who are waiting for the furor, anger and outrage over the non-broadcast of the VH1 Decades Rock special, "A Tribute To The Doors" to subside and fade away, need to get themselves a reality check. Millions of fans worldwide were eagerly anticipating that broadcast. The fans who were in the audience attest to the magic of the evening. It was an important event. It was a tribute to the band. Even though by his words and actions the drummer wants nothing to do with honoring his own legacy, it was still a tribute to the body of work he contributed to. It also marked the turning point when The Doors of the 21st Century complied with the court order and announced themselves to be Riders On The Storm. To read the impassioned post of someone who sounds like he is in a position to know whereof he speaks, go to the following link and read a message from today's Lizard Lounge board. When one goes to the official website of The Doors at www.thedoors.com, there is a link in several locations to sign up for an e-mailing list to "be informed." Can anyone remember the last time they got an e-mail as a result of signing up? All indications are that the band manager spends an inordinate amount of time on the Lizard Lounge message board as well as the forum on John Densmore's website (which he personally micro-manages), answering many repetitive questions about upcoming releases from Bright Midnight Archives and the already-delayed Love / Death / Travel CD box set. It is a fact that all three band members and the estate of Jim Morrison share in the cost of paying his salary. Should he be spending so much time in favor of one of the band member's websites? ... especially when The Doors official site is largely neglected and rarely has any current news. After all, who among us would not love to draw a reported annual salary of a half-million dollars just to spend a huge chunk of the time chit-chatting on-line with Doors fans? Sweet deal, eh? Personally, I think if the band manager would use the mailing list to regularly update fans on releases and projects, with full and comprehensive details, then he might not need to chat on-line so much and could tend to the business of The Doors. A good place to start might be to try acting like a manager and take a neutral and conciliatory position instead of siding with one band member only. At this point, however, he has clearly made his allegiances clear. The band needs a new manager, one who will represent the interests of Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, in addition to John Densmore and the estate of Jim Morrison. Is that asking too much? I understand his contract is up at the end of 2005. Let's hope he gets replaced by someone with qualifications.

"Rapture Riders" is a mashup that surfaced two years ago, a tantalizing blend of two memorable songs. 'Rapture Riders' (Blondie's 'Rapture' vs The Doors 'Riders On The Storm') sees official release as a fully sanctioned official release on EMI Records / WEA International this month. After being allowed access to the master tracks of both songs, the versions that will be available are new mixes. There are four versions, plus there is also a video planned for the single that apparently features unseen home movie footage of both bands. 'Rapture Riders' is also included on Blondie's new greatest hits compilation due out next month on EMI Records. (thanks, Linda) more info

John Densmore participated in a benefit for Katrina victims in Topanga recently. John appeared with drummer Hani Naser and recited a poem. read story

'Pop' is a new documentary film which delves into various pop culture conspiracies. Jim Morrison is one of the people the film looks at, along with Elvis, Marilyn, Janis, Bruce Lee, and Princess Diana. The film won Best International Documentary at the New York Independent Film Festival. read story

Tori Amos performed a cover of People Are Strange in San Diego on September 14, as reported here last month. A fan has found a website that has a download of that performance. October 17, 2005 'Punk: Attitude' <> The Mayor of Sunset Strip on TV

"Punk: Attitude" is a documentary on the punk movement that has been getting airplay on the IFC channel and has also been released on DVD. The film explores how Iggy Pop was inspired by a Doors show and decided to form The Stooges. There is footage of Iggy's wild stage shows inter-cut with a shot of the first Doors album. The commentator states that 'watching The Doors gave The Stooges new meaning to their lives.' (thanks, Alci)

'Mayor of the Sunset Strip' is a theatrical release from 2003 focused on Los Angeles disc jockey and pop star impresario Rodney Bingenheimer. The film is filled with interviews and footage of Rodney's friends, supporters and the many bands he helped break (including my own faves & friends, Dramarama). The film also contains footage of an interview with Ray Manzarek and Danny Sugerman. The film is currently airing on Showtime channel. movie review

What is a "sync license" ??? The outraged emails that I continue to receive from fans about the cancellation of the ill-fated VH1 Decades Rock 'A Tribute To The Doors' contain lots of questions about this process. A sync license is a publishing license to pay writers for music used in film, video or TV soundtracks.

Ray Manzarek's next novel, 'Snake Moon', is scheduled for release April 15, 2006 from Night Shade Books, ISBN 1597800414, according to Amazon.com. When this forthcoming work was referenced on Ray's official site several years ago, it was described as a "Southern Gothic tale of the supernatural set during the Civil War." John Densmore's book 'Riders On The Storm' (say, isn't there a terrific touring band by that same name?) has recently been released in a French version. Curiously, the book title on Fnac.com – Livres – The Doors, le vaisseau de cristal - John Densmore is literally translated to be The Crystal Ship. Pamela Des Barres was a well-connected groupie in the 60s who later wrote a book called "I'm With The Band: Confessions of a Groupie." Jim Morrison was one of the notches on her lucky belt, back in the day. That book has been republished in an updated edition, and Pamela did a book reading and signing earlier this week in Hollywood. read more

Morrison Hotel is in the news again. On page 1 of today's L.A. Times is a story about the ongoing redevelopment of L.A.'s downtown area into luxury lofts and condos, which is squeezing out the low-income housing. October 9, 2005 Angelo Barbera's band <> Santana covers The Doors <> Franz Ferdinand singer bashes Jim

Angelo Barbera's band i-94 played a set last night at the Viper room in Hollywood. Angelo was the bass player for The Doors on the VH-1 Storytellers show, as well as for The Doors of the 21st Century until late 2004. Carlos Santana is performing the solo from 'Light My Fire' during the song 'Evil Ways' in his current shows, including last night's show in El Paso, Texas. Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos has dismissed rock legend Jim Morrison as pretentious in an outspoken attack last week on rival songwriters and the music industry. October 8, 2005 ... a disappointing day <> Ian is safe

Well, this is the day that millions of fans were looking forward to. We would be adding something new to our Doors video collections; those opportunities are few and far between. Later tonight, VH1's Decades Rock series was scheduled to debut with "A Tribute To The Doors" filmed on August 5th before a live audience at Atlantic City's Trump Taj Mahal. That show will not be broadcast because one of the members of The Doors has not agreed to the sync licenses necessary for the broadcast. Can everyone remember how excited they were as they waited with anticipation for the debut broadcast on November 22, 2000 of VH1 Storytellers starring The Doors? Fans of The Doors, The Doors of the 21st Century, D21C, Riders On The Storm, and The Cult, as well as the fans of the many guest performers, were feeling that same kind excitement after waiting for more than two months for this new VH1 show. In the three years that members of the aforementioned bands have been performing together, they have become an exciting and finely-tuned performing unit. My personal opinion is that The Doors management and the band member who declines to be a part of this magic, simply do not want the TV-viewing public to see just how good this band has become. Yes, even with a different drummer and a different front man, this band delivers as a truly amazing rock & roll outfit, one who can play those songs we love as well as - if not better than - the original band. The Doors management has been widely quoted as having called the show "tacky" and/or "cheesy" to a number of people, using that as a reason for opposing the broadcast in another one of those 'protect the image and legacy' moves. The fact is, nothing has damaged the image and legacy of this great band more than the legal bullshit. Since the worst possible damage to the band image has already been done in L.A. County Superior Court, I say: let the fans judge 'A Tribute To The Doors' for themselves.

Ian Astbury left for India the day after the most recent Riders On The Storm show in Lancaster, California. A devastating 7.8 earthquake hit parts of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan within the last 24 hours. Band manager Tom Vitorino has spoken with Ian and all is well .. he is in Nepal and is safe from harm. Thank goodness!! (thanks, Tom)

October 7, 2005 Honolulu concert is a Katrina benefit show <> Particle is covering Doors song in shows <> Guitar Legends Magazine special Doors issue

Riders On The Storm and officials of the Honolulu Marathon will be donating a portion of their proceeds to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The concert is exclusive to marathon entrants only, who will pay $25 per ticket in addition to a race entry fee. read story

Robby Krieger joined the band Particle onstage at the Sunset House of Blues 3 years ago on their second anniversary show. Recent shows on their CaliLicious tour have included a cover of 'Break On Through.' Tomorrow night, October 8th, Particle returns to the Sunset House of Blues for their 5-year anniversary show.

Jim Morrison's iconic 'young lion' photo by Joel Brodsky graces the cover of a special Guitar Legends Magazine issue on newsstands now. The entire issue is devoted to The Doors. There are 7 separate stories; 6 of them are reprints from other magazines, other issues. The first story is a new interview with Robby about Riders On The Storm. Interestingly, in what seemed like a logical statement at press time, the story mentions that their "A Tribute To The Doors" would be aired on October 8th on VH1's Decades Rock Live. Thanks to all the fans of The Doors, The Doors of the 21st Century, and Riders On The Storm, who have written me over the last few days. You wrote to express your support of my remarks on October 3rd regarding the forced cancellation of VH1's Tribute To The Doors special that was supposed to premiere this coming weekend; about your sentiments about the person(s) behind that obstructive action; and your own dismay, disappointments and disgust with what is going on within the ranks of this revered band. In hindsight, I wish I had kept those emails so that I could post excerpts on this site!

The Doors' manager has been busily making lots of statements over the last day or two regarding future releases. I'd guess that the timing of this flurry of updates is a transparent attempt to divert fans' attention away from their expressed anger about the detestable VH1 Decades Rock obstruction. Anyway, based on past performance these dates should be taken with a grain of salt until there is evidence of an improved track record. The first new BMA release in quite awhile, which was going to be ready before the end of summer '05, is now promised to be available on November 29. I'm hoping that's November 29th of THIS year, but stay tuned, it's hard to tell with Rhino Handmade. (How many promised release dates have BMA and Rhino Handmade ever actually met?) Let's hope this one comes out on time: a 2-CD set of the May 1, 1970 show at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. The "Love/Death/Travel" box set is said to now be in production and ready in six weeks. However, it's release is being "postponed" until early January, ostensibly so that the promo copies do not get used by the recipients as Xmas gifts to others. Ridiculous! Maybe they should simply be more discriminating about who gets the promo copies. Heaven forbid that the fans should have the benefit of getting this product in their own Xmas stockings this year. Yep, that's really putting the fans' interests first, that one!

U.K. singer James Blunt's CD 'Back To Bedlam' has been out for almost a year. I just learned that track 7 called 'So Long Jimmy' is said to be a tribute to Jim Morrison, according to a recent review of that CD that I came across.

Riders On The Storm will play the Waikiki Band Shell in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 9th, as announced last week. But, there is good news / bad news for any fans who were thinking about using this show as an excuse to visit Hawaii. The concert is in association with the Honolulu Marathon: The good news is that tickets are only $25.00 each. The bad news is that the tickets are available for purchase by Race Entrants only. more info

October 3, 2005 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame <> interesting eBay items <> VH1 Decades Rock show will not be allowed to air

Some of the Jim Morrison archives are back on display at Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, according to an on-line story about the writer's recent visit there. I visited there in June 2003 and found a huge and wonderful display of items on loan from the Morrison family (read about it). When I was back in May of this year, I inquired about this exhibit and was told it was off-display, but would be back on again in the future. It sounds like at least part of it is, in this story. read it

eBay is always so interesting. I learned about a listing of Jim's sunglasses. These are purported to be the ones Jim wore in the 'blue shirt and black lab' photo series. I never thought of Jim as someone who would have custom sunglasses made, but, what do I know? The auction ended after 10 days with no bids on the $4,295. listing. This news makes me sick. Somebody, tell me it isn't true! I have been in touch with VH1 trying to find out why this Saturday's premiere episode of VH1 Decades Rock starring Robby, Ray and Ian and numerous musical guests, is not on their schedule and has not gotten any hype or promotion. The unbelievable answer is that one of the members of The Doors has not agreed to the sync licenses necessary for the broadcast. That's right, even those songs penned by Robby Krieger are therefore blocked from use. As it now stands, this show may never see the light of day. The millions of fans worldwide who have been waiting for this broadcast, can figure out for themselves who to thank.

In early August, the two band members who are still proud to be members of The Doors, played a special show in Atlantic City at Trump Taj Mahal. It was a special occasion AND a special honor, because that performance was recorded by VH1 and would be the premiere episode of their new Decades Rock series. Just try to imagine what VH1's production costs for that endeavor must have been!

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR BAND? It most visibly began when John declined (refused?) to join Ray and Robby when the band was invited to play to thousands of fans, old & new & future, when Harley-Davidson offered them the headlining slot on the opening night of their year-long, 100th anniversary celebration in 2002. There were offers made to accommodate John's tinnitus with special equipment; John declined (refused?) to join his band mates, but gave his blessing for Ray and Robby to go forward. Six months later, and after more tour dates were announced and played, John filed a lawsuit against his band mates to prevent them from touring and using the band name that has given them all comfortable lives. Two and a half years later, and many millions of dollars long gone, the lawsuit continues to become uglier and more bitter than I could ever have imagined in my worst-scenario fears.

While claiming that it was not about the money, but rather 'protecting the legacy' ... you would gasp to know how much money Plaintiff Densmore is pursuing. So, is it over yet? Absolutely not! Meanwhile, Ray and Robby have continued to tour, bringing the live music of The Doors to hundreds of thousands of fans in something like 80 cities in 20 countries on 4 continents.

Is there anyone reading this who does not agree with the basic logic that efforts such as VH1 Storytellers in 2000, 3 years of hard touring, and the now-submarined VH1 Decades Rock program ... would result in new fans, a fresh fervor of excitement about the band, and a surge of product sales? Who would benefit from that? Who wouldn't?? Let there be NO doubt in the minds of fans about who has been trying to preserve and expand on the legacy of The Doors, and who has focused on burying that image and hindering further growth.

What other surprises are in store for fans from the new Doors management? Is there really going to be a Doors documentary released in 2007? Although we are nearing the close of 2005, there has been no mention in any of the trade magazines or trade papers about this project being underway yet. If it ever does happen, is it just going to be a quickly assembled, slap-dash re-hash instead of a well-planned and vital product? Or, what about the book project? And, what can we expect from Bright Midnight in the future? Anyone who read Jeff Jampol's statement in January 2005 about what direction he was going in, working for the band AND for the fans .. should re-read it. It's now October. What have we seen? Oh yeah, more re-mixes. For shame.

An unusual photo of Jim Morrison can be found in the September issue of Classic Rock Magazine (cover: Robert Plant). The 1968 black and white photo can be found on page 64 in the Jefferson Airplane article. The photo shows Jim leaning back with both arms resting on a fence, wearing a velvet sweater and psychedelic collar. (thanks, Fred)
