Judd Whitcher was a local L.A. guitarist who replaced Ray's brother in Rick & The Ravens, way back when. He was a member of that pre-Doors band for about six months and played on their recordings. In 1991 Judd and Ray appeared together on an L.A. show called "Rock 'n' Roll Record" where they performed several songs and also sat for an interview with the show's host, Steve Propes. Several years ago, Judd was interviewed about his Rick & The Ravens days at my home by Kerry Humpherys of Doors Collectors Magazine for an as-yet unpublished project that Kerry has been working on. I saw Judd every month at a local record show I attended, where he sold and traded old records as a hobby. He always enjoyed my updates on his old buddy Ray and learning the latest Doors news and activities. At today's record show, I was saddened to learn that Judd died on June 18 of a heart attack while on a fishing trip with his wife. He was a very young 61 years old.

Morrison Hotel has dodged another bullet for now. According to a recent report, the plan to bulldoze and redevelop the neighborhood around the hotel has been stopped for the time being. This is due to a court decision involving zoning, past contracts, taxes, and a lot of other legal mumbo jumbo. The football stadium plan appears to have been permanently scrapped. Although a hotel and shopping center will be built adjacent to Staples Center, those will probably be on property fronting Figueroa Street. (thanks, Mark)

Bright Midnight Records will release a long box version of the cube box set. According to recent BMR news at www.thedoors.com: "What was released as the cube in the year 2000, a collection of the six studio albums with all original artwork restored and sound re-mastered, plus Essential Rarities, is getting a new make-over as a long box on Elektra Records. Essential Rarities is being deleted to make room for a disc of bonus material, including the long lost studio version of Celebration of the Lizard. Each album will be represented with an out-take from those particular sessions. Eventually, this disc, with even more never before released material, will be made available exclusively through Bright Midnight Records so those of you who bought cube won't have to purchase the long box to get the bonus tracks. Within six months of its commercial release, the Outtakes album will be made available."
"Finishing touches are being applied to new releases due later this year, Vancouver and Best of the Boots, a project Robby Krieger has had in the works for quite some time."
