My dear friend Glyn (who, incidentally, conceived and created this website for me 3 years ago) attended the taping of VH1's "Decades Rock Live" on Friday night in Atlantic City. His full review of the show will appear in an upcoming tri-state weekly music publication. In the meantime, he has provided me with some details of the show to share.
The line-up of acts and guests for this very special performance included Vanilla Fudge, Pat Travers, Macy Gray, Perry Farrell, John Sebastian, and Antigone Rising.
All-girl band Antigone Rising opened the evening with a Doors medley, as well as "You're The Reason" from their latest CD.
The reunited and original line-up of Vanilla Fudge played "She's Not There" and then a cover of The Doors' "Changeling."
When The Doors of the 21st Century were onstage, Ray unveiled the band's new name and dedicated their performance and new name to the memory of Jim Morrison and the last song Morrison ever played on earth, "Riders On The Storm."
Macy Gray strutted her stuff in a peach sequined dress and oversized afro, joining the band for "Love Me Two Times."
Perry Farrell of Janes Addiction performed "Touch Me" -- complete with a string quartet and horn section -- as a torchy love ballad.
"When The Music's Over" and "Crystal Ship" were also in the evening's set. "People Are Strange" was dedicated to the boardwalk freak show going on outside. They closed with "Light My Fire."
What with a power outage caused by a severe electrical storm, and the need to do re-takes on some performances, it was a very late night which ended at 1:45 in the morning with one final song, in honor of George Dubya: "War" (What Is It Good For?). Members of Vanilla Fudge, D21C/ROTS, Antigone Rising, John Sebastian and Pat Travers all rocked out together for this finale.
"Decades Rock Live" will air in the fall, and this one is said to be the premiere show for the new VH1 series.
