Doors 21st Century @ M.E.N. Arena

MAYBE it was the number of rock greats playing over the weekend, abstention by
the Jim Morrison-loving purists or the early start time, but there were plenty
of unoccupied seats when the lights went down.
The Doors Of The 21st Century – or, more accurately, two original members, a
couple of session musicians and an ex-goth rock shouter from Merseyside – fall
somewhere between a reunion, a tribute act and a blatant cash in.
But for those who attended, it didn’t matter, as they had come to enjoy rather
than judge.
And they were not let down. From storming opener Break On Through via other set
highlights such as a perfect Love Her Madly, a magnificent strutting Back Door
Man and a beautiful Spanish Caravan, messrs Manzarek, Krieger and their new
cohorts did not disappoint.
Former Cult frontman Ian Astbury will never be Jim Morrison.
What he was last night, however, was finely focused on doing the best he could
to recreate moments long gone.
And he took on the task with aplomb.
